Yanmar Brahma: The UTV With Diesel Power

Yanmar Brahma: The UTV With Diesel PowerYanmar is famous for their diesel engines, and their Bull UTVs have been a popular choice for commercial users since their introduction. It was just a matter of time before they put the two together. That has finally happened with the introduction of the Brahma line of Utility Task Vehicles. They combine a three-cylinder diesel from their tractor line with a new chassis that offers high cargo and towing capacity. Add in a long list of convenience features, and you have the perfect vehicle for commercial farmers, groundskeepers and construction workers.

Power

The Brahma uses the same one liter, three-cylinder liquid-cooled diesel found in their compact tractors. In this application, it produces 24 HP. This engine is Final Tier 4 compliant, so it meets emissions standards everywhere including California and Quebec.

Next to the driver’s seat, there’s a small, high-mounted grille. That’s the air intake. By fitting the Brahma with a snorkel from the factory, you don’t have to worry about water, mud or dirt clogging the engine. Need a vehicle that can work all day without interruption? The fuel tank holds 10.5 gallons, so the Brahma rarely has to stop to refuel.

The rest of the drivetrain is more conventional. Power goes through a CVT to keep the engine at its peak power range. The drivetrain can operate in 2×4 or 4×4 modes, and the rear differential locks to increase traction for steep climbs.

Working on this new UTV is easy. Flip up the dump bed, and you have easy access to the engine and transmission for maintenance.

Payload and Towing

The Brahma has a 1,400 lb. payload capacity. Its all-steel 17 cubic foot dump bed can carry up to 1,000 lbs, 400 lbs. more than Yanmar’s gas-powered Bull UTVs. Towing capacity is also higher at 2,000 lbs, 500 lbs. more than the Bull. The bed measures 47.4 x 52.8 x 11.8 inches. Yanmar includes 2-inch hitch receivers front and back for towing and attaching equipment.

To keep all this weight under control, the Brahma has 10-inch disc brakes on the front and 8.7-inch discs on the rear. All four discs are gripped with twin piston calipers. Electric power steering comes standard.

Off-Road Capabilities

This UTV has a maximum ground clearance of 12.2 inches, a number more typical of sports side-by-sides. This ride height is adjustable, letting you balance rock crawling ability with stability. The wheels have 10.6 inches of travel at the front and 10.2 inches in the rear. A 47-inch wide track keeps the vehicle planted on rough terrain. Skid plates come standard.

Cabin

Since this vehicle will be used for full work days, Yanmar decided to focus on comfort. The Brahma seats two passengers instead of three like the Bull, giving riders more space.

The cabin uses an open design with a flat floor that has a tiny center cover for the front driveshaft. There’s also no need for the side guards found on other UTVs, since every model comes with a roof and roll structure. The seats slide and tilt, and they have adjustable lumbar support, making them comfortable for passengers of all sizes.

LED projector beam headlights, side mirrors, turn signals, horn and hazard lights are standard. This lets the Brahma comply with neighborhood vehicle standards, so you can drive it short distances on the road.

Need to carry tools and equipment? The Brahma has a 30-gallon side storage bin below the bed and a 17-gallon bin under the hood.

Models

Yanmar makes two versions of the Brahma. The only difference is the amount of standard equipment. The base Canopy weighs 1,762 lbs. The Semi-Cab adds front and rear windows, wiper washer, center mirror, and bumper. It also has an 18.23-gallon under-seat storage bin. As equipped, it weighs 1,848 lbs. Yanmar offers everything on the Semi-Cab as an accessory, so you can add what you want to the Canopy.

Accessories

The Optional PRO front brush guard has a built-in winch mount, freeing up the front hitch receiver for other equipment. Aluminum wheels are available, as well as turf tires that won’t tear up landscaping. Expect Yanmar to add more accessories over time, matching what you can get for their gas-powered UTVs. This including winches, plows and work lights.

Colors

Yanmar offers both the Canopy and Semi-Cab in green and metallic red. You can also get Yanmar Red to match your tractor.
