Early this year, Texas-based manufacturers Bennche and Massimo announced a new partnership, bringing their manufacturing expertise and dealer support together under one roof. The first new product to come out of this new company is the Cowboy 400S, a UTV that aims for a low price while including everything buyers want from the start.
Performance
The Cowboy uses a 391 cc SOHC engine with fuel injection that produces 25.8 hp, which is an increase over Bennche’s older 500cc motor. The engine is connected to a CVT with a high and low range. Power can be routed to one or both axles using the selectable four-wheel drive, while a locking rear differential helps with climbing difficult surfaces. The 400s uses hydraulic disc brakes on all four corners, and aluminum wheels come standard. An independent A-arm suspension is used on both front and rear, and all the shocks are adjustable.
Equipment
Look at the price, and you’d think there was somewhere that the company cut corners. However, you’d really have to nitpick to find something missing from this vehicle.
LED headlights, brake lights, turn signals and side mirrors are included, which is enough to get the Cowboy licensed as a Low-Speed Vehicle (LSV) or Neighborhood Vehicle (NV) in many states. This means you can legally drive it on the road for short distances, letting you move between properties without having to haul the vehicle on a trailer.
The 47 x 34.5-inch dump bed can carry up to 400 lbs. Long rails on the sides provide plenty of space for tie downs, while the bed can be tilted from either side thanks to dual dump handles. A 3,500 lb. winch helps pull the UTV out of tight spots, while a hitch receiver that lets this side by side tow trailers weighing up to 1,000 lbs.
Look in the cab area and you’ll see the usual LCD gauge cluster along with some storage spaces and a 12-volt power outlet. The bench seat has headrests that mount to the top of the roll cage, keeping the seating comfortable while letting the driver and passenger reach into the bed without getting out of the vehicle. The ROPS-mounted folding windshield and roof are included for weather protection.
What’s missing? The steering rack is manual with no option for an electrically assisted unit, but with a dry weight of 1,100 lbs, it’s not really necessary. There’s also no option for a buss bar nor are there loads of mounting points for added lights, but for the majority of buyers, the included lighting is more than sufficient.
Just One Accessory
With so much already included, there’s only one piece of equipment Bennche offers for this UTV: a snow plow. This blade bolts to the underside of the frame and is raised and lowered by the winch.
Colors
The 400S is available in Candy Red, Pearl White, Sapphire and Vista Camouflage.
Warranty
Bennche guarantees the entire Cowboy 400S including the engine for 12 months with no limit on operation hours.
